End of Semester Note

Band… Now read this!!

Is it really Christmas/New Year’s break already?? Seems as if we were just getting started! Nonetheless, thank you all for a great Fall 2014 semester. We’ve enjoyed some great performances, starting WAY BACK in July, and continuing through to December. I am so proud of what we, as a family, accomplished through our diligence, care, respect, and passion for what we do together! As we all pause for the semester break (and enjoy some time away from 19452!), here are some items of “Band business” to consider:
District CONCERT Honor Band  I am proud of everyone who played their audition on ACT/Parade day. Thanks for representing our school.  (Austin, Scott, Zach, Kendall, Kayla) you must see me before I leave on my roadtrip. I have your music for Honor band. Come to the band party this Friday night… get it then!! You will definitely want to GHAP over the break. You can go to the LMEA District9 website for rehearsal and performance information. Remember to submit your participation fees.
DISTRICT Honor JAZZ Band   I will send in registration for the January auditions before I head out. I have spoken to those of you who should do this event. Get busy with the scales and prepared material (from the Jazz Conception book) and start thinking about “sight-reading” in jazz style!
All-South Honor Band (at U of Southern Miss!) I have spoken with a number of you about this, too. Use your time wisely over the break to prepare your scales (3) along with your solo or etude. We need to have a finished CD audition recording in the mail very soon after we return to school. Beat the rush…do it now!!

MERRY TUBACHRISTMAS   is this Saturday, 20 Dec 14. Registration/rehearsal will be at Pottle Hall (SLU campus) beginning at 9:00 am. Remember to bring your $10.00 for registration and maybe a few more coins for a book (20 clams!) and TUBACHRISTMAS paraphernalia (knit cap, button. etc.). Remember to bring a horn and a music stand. Everyone else, come out and hear us at Hammond Square mall, 2:00 pm. Not sure yet where, but come find us!

BAND CHRISTMAS PARTY is Friday night, 19 Dec at the bandroom. Bring desserts, or drinks, or chips, fruit/veggie munchies. Fancy Nachos will be served… that’s right, it’s “Not-cho Party” time!! 6:00 pm – 9:30.

See you all soon!

Saturday, 13 Dec Honor Band/Parade

Band... now read this!!
Again, kudos on the amazing day of concerts this past Thursday! I am very proud of the work we did in a few shorts weeks to put together "Some Assembly Required!" All of the parts came together very nicely.
Today is another busy day. Good luck to everyone who will be auditioning for the District Honor Band! Remember that you MUST bring your Release Form, signed by a parent, to me BEFORE you check-in at the registration table!!!!
The Parade information is the same as has been previously announced. Meet at 4:00 pm at Memorial Park (Strawberry Festival Fairgrounds), get dressed, and ready to roll.
Have a good morning; see you all soon.

Upcoming events

Band.....Now Read This!!!!

First and foremost, we hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving and a happy/safe Black Friday (for those participating).

We have the Christmas Lighting on Friday, December 5, 2014 and we will need volunteers for chaperones at the Lighting and to sell Hot Chocolate and Cotton Candy across the street by the Train in town.  We will need to get started with set up about 2pm.  We will need to keep an eye on the weather as I am not sure how cold it will be or not.

We have the Christmas concert on December 11, 2014 at PHS.   We will need volunteers to chaperone the parade. We have our Christmas Parade on December 13, 2014 along with ACT testing and District Honor band auditions.

Our Night Watch shirts are in and we will get those to you upon return to school on Monday, December 1st after ASR.  Thank you for all that you do to help contribute to this band's success.  Please continue to sign up.  You are greatly appreciated as usual.

17 -Thanksgiving TWIB

Band ... Now read this!

I hope that you all had a good weekend. Greenwave Band will be in full transition from Marching Season to Symphonic Band and Winterguard activities. Greenwave Football will continue as long as the "Toula Train keeps chuggin' on down the tracks! This Friday's rematch with the Wreckin' Rams from Acadiana should be a barn burner! I'll be on touch with their directors to invite them to play a tune with us. The South Lafourche kids and directors had nothing to say but nice things about us and they appreciated the hot chocolate, too!

THERE IS A VERY IMPORTANT BOOSTERS' MEETING tomorrow night at 6:00 pm. Please make every effort to be there. The school calendar is jammed, packed with meetings/activities/community stuff. If you are not able to make the meeting, please check the Band's website, FB page, and messages from Charms. I understand that many kids don't respond to FB messages..I am told that it is not cool anymore. Be that as it may, I would appreciate a response. Very few hard copies are sent home, as they usually never make it home (they "get lost" in the backpacks or they end up on the floor). Please update your contact information if you need to do so. THANK YOU! :)

The official payout day for the recent Mattress Sale Fundraiser will be this Thursday, at the beginning of ASR!

Please check the official Greenwave Band Calendar on the Charms system. There will be some adjustments as Football season continues through the play-offs.

See you all on campus!

MATTESS SALE PUSH!!

Band... Now Read This!!

We are only days away from our hugest, largest, biggest, easiest, and all AWESOME and TERRIFIC Fundraiser... THE MATTRESS SALE!!! Why am I describing it that way? Once again, we can make an ENTIRE season of concessions profits (6 games) in 1 day!!  What we made on the Band Camp Cookie Dough Sale... Imagine 6 such events to make what we did in 1 day!!  And wouldn't we all get burned out if we had to do a 35 weeks of FR's at $200.00 profit per week?  We made over $7,000.00 in profit last year in ONE DAY! All at a cost of $0.00 to us.

That's a lot of number crunching! The number that matters most is 1. Yes, just 1! If every one get just one committed adult person to come in for the sale, that's 100 people through the door. Last year, 57 mattress orders made $7,000.00 for the band (in a trip year..That all went to transportation and individual trip accounts). That 7,000 kept the cost per person from going sky-high. This year's profit is ear-marked for big ticket "Wish List" items that will impact the entire group.

Thank you in advance for all that you have done to make this year's Sale a success! Here's what is left to do in the final days:

  1. Make your phone calls to contacts.
  2. Sign up for a shift on Saturday.
  3. Keep handing out flyers and coupons.
  4. Use you social media contacts to spread the word and to make personal contacts.
  5. Continue to like and share Mattress Sale info as it is updates on social media.
  6. Call your committed contacts on the morning of the sale as a reminder to come out to the school on Saturday, 10 -5.
  7. Get ready to have some fun on Saturday. For the few of you that have already spoken to me about other Saturday commitments, see me for how you can help Thursday and Friday evenings BEFORE the sale on Saturday.

I am excited!!! And I hope that you are , too!

Fundraiser Opportunities

Parents,

Fundraisers:
I have two fundraisers scheduled and two more in the process of being scheduled.

Mark your calendars, please:
Saturday, November 22nd from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Winn Dixie in Berryland Center in Ponchatoula.

Saturday, December 20th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Winn Dixie in Berryland Center in Ponchatoula.

For this event, you will need: instrument, music, wear green polo or band spirit shirt with jeans and tennis shoes. If you have a music stand, please bring with you. We will be playing music outside for tips.

At least 2 parents are needed for this event. I have requested time off from work to handle, but in case I cannot get off of work, I am asking two parents to handle with my help, of course. I will be in charge of handling the the names of students that sign in and out along with the money collected and will divide it out accordingly.

As you know, band fees were due by November 1st. However, I am willing to give an extension to those students who still owe fees and give them an opportunity to attend either one or both of these events to help them earn money toward their outstanding fees. I am willing to give an extension on your band fees with the understanding that you will communicate with me and make the effort of trying to pay down your band fees. I have plenty of parents that have been contacted with their balances and have blatantly not responded nor made an effort to make a payment since the first meeting of May 27, 2014. I ask that you please keep me informed as I keep you informed of your deadlines and reminders of handling your business.

Please remember that any response to Charms goes to Mr. Square. My email is: tinahooper@charter.net if you would like respond to me or send me a message just so I make a note on your fee summary.

Thank you.

Monday, 3 Nov 14 District 6 MB Assessment

Band... Now read this!!

Good morning! It's going to be a great day! And yes, a LONG day, too. We have some things to celebrate from this past Saturday's performance at SLU, as well as a few things we can tighten up before tonight at District 6.

The show (LMEA District 6 MB Assessment) will be held at East Jefferson HS (Joe Yenni Stadium) at 400 Phlox street in Metairie.

YOU WILL NOT HAVE TIME TO GO HOME after school!!

BRING EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR PERFORMANCE (Shoes, Socks, Snack, Something warm for under your uniform). GREEN 14-15 shirt under FDMU!! You should definitely bring a few $$ for dinner at concessions. There will be patches and t-shirts available, too.

Go to all of your classes! An announcement will be made over the intercom to dismiss you from 6th and 7th periods. At that time, we will get dressed, do a warm-up and run-run through on the field. From there we will load the buses and trailers. At some point, you will get a quick snack before our performance time.

You will have time for concessions after our performance (our showtime is 6:30). Your job is to watch bands and learn!!

We we arrive back at 19452, you ALL must take care of your uniforms, unload the trailers, and put things AWAY, where they belong.

We do not have school on Tuesday.

See you on campus!

Friday, 31 Oct 14 Boo!

B... NRT!

What a day! Just a little more (40 counts) to finish the show! I really enjoyed ASR, even when "Swiss" revealed itself in the "pepper jack" ...know what I mean. Thank you for your diligence and work ethic. I do hope that you all understood my resounding message, concerning your citizenship on campus.

Wow, seniors!! This is it, your Fall Season Spotlight night! Most of us have been together since we were at the JH (remember when you thought I crashed that party?) Guard daughters... seems not so long ago we you all arrived on campus for a "flag" meeting. Time sure has flown and I hope that somewhere, sometime, someplace, Seniors, that you identify a moment in your band days that you will cherish forever. I consider myself privileged and humbled that you have chosen, and continue to choose, to spend some much of your academic and extra-curricular time with the band family and me.

Busy day, all day Friday, y'all: Football Spirit Concerts in the morning (Geaux Green Wave Football!), Vinyard "Party on the Yard!"; smorgasbord of munchies afterwards, Seniors' Night, 5th Quarter, and then SLU's Strawberry Classic MB Festival on Saturday; P&P on Sunday; then LMEA District 6 MB Assessment on Monday night! Okay, take a breather on Tuesday (no school!)
Parents, I am looking forward to seeing you all at the stadium tomorrow evening. I hope to "walk" down to say hello at concessions. Thank you for all that you do to make OUR band program happen for our young people.

NEVER a dul moment in the GreenWave Band. That's how we roll!

And keep sharing... All about that Mattress Sale, that Mattress Sale, that Mattress Sale... no Cookie Dough!

Follow-ups for Monday 20 Oct

Band... now read this!

What a LONG musical day!

Thank you all students who showed up for Parish Honor Band Auditions this afternoon. I am very proud of all of you and congratulations to those of you who have been selected to this year's group. I will have a rehearsal schedule and participation agreement (contract) for each of you on Tuesday, 21 Oct. Thank you Miss Dina and Miss Stacy for all of your help. And kudos to the students who helped with set=up, registration, and tear-down. Could not have done it without you!

Guard... oh my, but aren't you going to look spectacular in full "Night Watch" costumes!! I am so excited to see what it all looks like under the lights! :)

A HUGE thank you to everyone who attended the Potluck "Spaghetti Dinner" in the cafeteria! I hope that you all had a good time. Thank you for being so attentive to Mrs. Sarah Thibodeaux of Custom Fundraising Solutions, for being with us tonight to kick off our 2nd Annual Mattress Fundraiser! Let's put her plan into action and generate another successful, colossal, profitable day on Saturday, 8 Nov. Let's match or beat last year's numbers of 57 units sold for a total profit of $7075.00 ... in 1 day's work!

ASR tomorrow goes until 5:22. Help me watch the clock. Remember, I am task oriented. Let's all be on the field by 3:02 in the fundamentals block!

It's a GHAP Weekend!!

Band... Listen up!
We had a rockin' good time last night with OUR 7-0 Greenies! Now, go out to the Stadium and support our ROTC at the huge meet at the Swamp. And it would behoove you all to GHAP to the max this weekend for Parish honor band auditions!
And , guard...don't think I forgot about you! This beautiful weekend would be a good time to grab your guard sister, break out your camera phone or "old school camcorder" , go outside, film yourselves doing fundamentals, guard routine, tosses, etc. Then later, over a snack, sit down and watch the film footage. You'll be surprised just how much you'll clean and tighten up if you do this! If you cannot do this with a guard partner, get mom, pop, sis/bro, neighbor, or someone else to run the camera (you know you'll use you phone, right?!), Then text the footage as an attachment to a guard friend (even I can do that!) HAVE FUN!!!!!

Band...Now read this!!

Wow! Homecoming week was awesome. First off, the moon's cycle was incredible! Rehearsals and classes went very well. I recovered well from the 2 gaskets I blew on Monday. And you know I am not one to enjoy pep rallies, but I MUST ADMIT that I had FUN!! Rah, the, rah, rah, rah!
Congrats again to the Greenwave Football team for another decisive victory. 6-0 so far this season, with all the cylinders clicking...way to go!
I must share with you all of the compliments for our performances this past week. 5th quarter was the culmination of all of your hard work. Let's keep it movin' and groovin' in this direction. We had a bunch of excited JH band kids with us, many of whom can't wait to be "Grunts" next summer. Here's a shout out to Mr. Jeff for all of your hard work and for your help in the stands. Booster parents...thank you for everything in every aspect of a successful Greenwave Band Friday night. It truly takes a village to raise a child and thank you for being part of our special group. Shout to Miss Hintz for the amazing artwork on the backdrops!!
I spent most of Saturday on the road and at Pineville HS with Charles, Scott, and Zack for 2nd Round All State auditions. This is the most rigorous, high stakes, unnerving individual student event in all of LMEA. I am very proud of our boys for their fine musical efforts and for representing Ponchatoula HS and Tangipahoa Parish in the proceedings. Be sure to give them some "at-a-boys" when you see them. Congratulations to Zackery Cusimano for making the 2014 LMEA All-State Concert Band!! Way to go!

This afternoon, please remember the Scentsy product FundRaiser, in the chorus room, at 1:00. There will be folks on hand to help you do some EARLY Christmas shopping! Wink, Wink...Nudge, Nudge!

Tomorrow, there are no classes for students, as teachers will attend professional development sessions. However, and more importantly, we have the annual POTLUCK Supper in the cafeteria, Set-up between 6:00 - 6:30. At 6:30, i will introduce Mrs. Sarah Thibodeaux, of Custom Frundraising Solutions, to kick-off the 2nd Annual Mattress Sale. that we raised over $7000 in one day last year! (That's is more than a whole season of football concessions!) Get ready for yard signs, banners, phone calls, personal referrals, personal contacts, personal interaction, and of course, the wearing of the mattress suits!

More TWIB details later  Monday is a great day to work on Honor Band and fall solo festival/assessment materials.  ASR on Tuesday and Thursday: Away game vs. Slidell this Friday.  We begin the 3rd and final movement this week...don't miss ASR!!

Homecoming Week 2014 TWIB

Band... now read this!!
Happy Homecoming Week!!
I will post the TWIB board later this afternoon, when I get back to 'Toulatown. I have enjoyed a much needed camping trip with Joseph and had a chance to visit with several of my Band Director BFF's!
What beautiful weather we finally have for marching band. Homecoming Week is especially busy (when are we NOT busy?!?!) For now, know that we have ASR's as follows:
Monday GUARD SECTIONAL ONLY (3-5) [During the day, both lunches, I will meet with ALL band Student Leadership Officers... we need to have an October check-in]
Tuesday Full Marching Band 3-5:15 (This will include mini-sectional for everyone)
Wednesday MOCKS for All-state 2nd rounders (ZC, CH; SP) Everyone else...please leave. DO NOT INTERRUPT this very important tutoring/coaching session!!
Thursday Full Marching Band 3 - 5:15 (this day also includes the practice for Homecoming court presentation. When we are finished with HC court, we will resume ASR as normal)
Friday HOMECOMING Game vs. Covington Will our boys go 6-0? Our mission is to support all of their efforts on the gridiron. There will be no 3rd quarter break away from our area for this game. Refreshments will be "catered" to you for this game. Also, we will have guests from PJHS and Holy Ghost School, along with their directors and some parents! EVERYONE MUST mind your P's and Q's!! We will perform the Annual and much anticipated 5th Quarter Show after the Greenwave Football victory over the Covington Lions.
The bandroom will need IMMEDIATE attention tomorrow morning, especially since all of the instructions for dismissal were NOT fully implemented!!
Have a good day! It is Highly Recommended that you all participate (following the guidelines) in all Homecoming Week activities!
See you on Campus!

Northshore Game Clarification

Band... Now read this!

I, Mr. Square, will be at the Northshore game. It is Mrs. Tina Hooper, Boosters President, who will not be at the game. We all hope that her schedule allows her to be with us for Homecoming week). I received a number of calls (concerned people, checking on me...I appreciate you all). When I finally had a minute to get to email and other non-musical "to-dos", I saw the message.

Anything directly from me generally begins with "Band... Now read this!" .  if a message comes from the band booster officers, such a message ends with "Boosters" and/or a booster officer's name, ABOVE the default James I. Square, NBCT.

Hope that helps. Thanks again for your concern. See your band/guard member at downbeat 5:13. And I hope to be mobile enough to see you, as parent booster, at the stadium!

P.S.  I will be sending out VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION about the 2nd Annual MATTRESS SALE FUNDRAISER (to be "kicked-off" at the Potluck Supper Monday, 13 Oct) and the Popeye's "Love that Music" Contest.

Band…. Now read this!!

Let me begin by thanking everyone for a 100% effort in all aspects of this past Friday night’s game. I was very proud of you all. Looking good, sounding, moving with purpose and energy! Let’s keep it that way for the rest of the season.
This past week was “1st Round All-State auditions here in LMEA District IX. Kyle is still waiting for results from the Jazz band auditions recording session.  We will find out results when all other districts have completed and submitted their entries. Best wishes Kyle…you got this! Thank you goes out to Javier, Charles, Ricky Bobby, Scott, and Zackery for representing PHS in the instrumental auditions. You all played very well and I enjoyed working MOCKS with you. Congratulations to Zackery, Scott, and Charles for qualifying for the 2nd (and final) round auditions, which will take place Saturday, 11 October, at Pineville HS (ROADTRIP!) Keep working those scales and PREPARED etudes, and through in some sight-reading.

Looking ahead to show drill… we should have very moderate weather this week, so let’s max out our efforts. The plan is to complete the back end of Mvmt 1 and move on to Mvmt 2. This week’s show at the Mandeville game will be Wavettes on Gimme Some Lovin, Movement 1 complete, and Boogie Shoes for Colorguard (with more hornline footwork).

There will be no TangiBandapalooza this weekend. Not all Tangi Bands are quite ready for this. See you in 2015! We will continue to build our show and take it on the road later in October and November!  As such, MWR is planning a fantastic Saturday night shindig for us at the bandroom! Details soon! YOU DON”T WANT TO MISS THIS!
Read the TWIB! READ the TWIB! I say again… READ THE TWIB!

Coming soon to a bandroom near you:
1. Letter Jacket Orders for ELIGIBLE band and colorguard members. Mr. Square will have details on Tuesday!
2. Nightwatch Theme shirt design will be revealed.
3. Everyone MUST participate in either Parish Honor Band Auditions OR Fall Solo Assessment! MANY DEATAILS LATER!!!!!
4. Scale of the week: B-flat and E concert! NEW MUSIC for the Popeye’s “Love that Music” contest! Could earn us $10,000.00
5. MATTRESS SALE Fundraiser is coming in November. Time to start getting the WORD out!!
6. SYNERGY! Is still a very cool concept...That's how we get to 100% as a group!
I am looking forward to being back on campus. I’ll still be in the chair and/or on crutches until I can just hop, skip, and jump again! OKAY… maybe just walk, skip, and move with mo’ better PURPOSE and ENERGY!

Rise and Shine; Daylight is burning. The ruptured water main has been repaired. Back to business as usual.

Thank you to the volunteer crew that came to the bandroom yesterday afternoon. Your "sweat equity" will reap many benefits for the band, many times over!

We need 100% effort from everyone, especially since we lost an entire academic day. ASR today will be on our new field. Be sure to have ALL of your tools. The goal is to complete all footwork on the opener and set up for movement 2. Remember that the Wavettes tune this week is GSL. In classes today, you will get several new tunes. Late Night / Early Morning Thoughts

New day... clean slate. Let's all move it forward, Greenwave Band!
In other news... many of you have asked if I need help at home. My biggest need right now is lawn service. My dad is a little old to do it himself; Joseph and machine tools are not a good combination. I am insane, yes, but not crazy enough to ride the Snapper or run the WeedEater on crutches or in the wheelchair right now. That being said, any suggestions or volunteers? Thank you, JSquare

Great job at last night's Home Opener against Jesuit. Kudos to the entire Greenwave family for an exciting night at the Swamp...what a way to spend a Friday night under the lights! Again, be sure to compliment our gridiron warriors (FB team) and all of the coaching staff for this monumental victory over the Blue Jays. And I was overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of the Cheerleaders, Guard, Wavettes, and Band for entertaining the awesome student body and fan base in the stands. And let's no forget our PHS faculty who came out of the classrooms, in force, to support our boys and girls. Band boosters... I take off my hat to each and everyone of you for make everything run so smoothly with concessions and band operations. TOTAL TEAM EFFORT all around! Am i excited or what?!?!?!

1-7 Sept TWIB

Band... Now read this!!

I hope that you are all enjoying the weekend, even with today's rain!

Here is the TWIB for this coming week. It will be a busy Friday and Saturday, with our 1st game of the season (YEAH!!) and SLU Band Day. Weather permitting, I'd would like to spend our ASR time on the field to review for the halftime performance ("Night Watch" Movement One; "The Horse" for Wavettes; Fight Song March-off) and some indoor time on stands tunes/ pep rally diddies.

On Wednesday, All-State candidates will need to play all 12 major scales, in the correct order and the first half of BOTH prepared etudes (they are called PREPARED for a reason!).

A word of caution to everyone about using social media in respectful and positive ways. Otherwise, your disrespectful and negative ways of communicating (about one another, other non-band students, or the band family) may be detrimental to your tenure in the Greenwave Band program. Big words, right?  Look them up.

I am very proud of the work that we all have done over the past couple of weeks. Let's keep the flock moving forward!

Think ahead to Thursday, 4 Sep.  COOKIE DOUGH Fundraiser Delivery will that day. We will put out the word as soon as possible about delivery and processing time so that YOU CAN HAVE YOURS PICKED UP!!! It is shipped Frozen and needs to be delivered to your customers FROZEN.

More details later this weekend about music and guard routine for SLU Band Day.

Thank you all for your hard work last week. I did spend about an hour a the bandroom today, and it is evident that you all were very productive. Please read the attached TWIB photo. We are 12 days out from our Friday night season opener vs. Jesuit (a tough football opponent and a pretty darn good band). Let's finish out the 1st movement, get our pregame sounding great, and rock a steady beat for the Wavettes. The post-Labor Day week will happen quickly. I am hopeful that my recuperative progress will enough so that I can be "back in the saddle" by Tuesday. The swelling has not been fun..." Ice, Ice baby" to the tune "Pressure" by Queen featuring Freddie Mercury...that's my new theme song! I miss you all. Behave and do you individual and collective best! In closing, my heartfelt thanks to the committee of folks who have generously cared for Joseph and me this past couple of weeks.
