FINAL 2013-14 TWIB

Band… Now read this!!!

1.      Congratulations and Farewell again to the Class of 2014. When you are done partying in the “room with no roofa”, may your perseverance and passion sustain and carry you across the finish line of your dreams and aspirations! Best wishes to you all!

2.      Thanks and congrats again to the Classes of 15, 16, and 17 for a fine evening of music at the recent Commencement Exercises for the seniors. You played well and enhanced the dignity of the occasion by both sight and sound.

3.      Here are some “housekeeping” items that we need to attend to before we move on to our individual summer plans. Please read carefully:

a.      TWIB  Tuesday 28 and Wednesday 29 May   (8:00 -4:00) Percussion Mini-Camp continues; The folks that were here today (Monday 26 May) got a lot of technique work hashed out. Be sure to join the fun in the next 2 days!

b.      TWIB Colorguard Camp begins here at school tomorrow morning at 8:00 am. Be sure to be on time, properly dressed, hydrated, proper footwear, sunscreen, etc. Measurements will be taken sometime mid-morning; if you have any fees/payments, we will collect those (Miss Hintz will be here).

c.       TWIB  TUESDAY EVENING 2014-15 Kick-off Meeting in Auditorium  6:00 pm  We will out forms, pass out show music (NIGHT WATCH), update Charms info, give out camp information, etc. You can get a jumpstart on forms by printing out a set ahead of time. Go to www.phsmarchingband.org or .com, print and complete. Please note the fees schedule breakdown that helps you fit this into your budget.

d.      WEDNESDAY 28 May Band Party at school; 4-10; food, friends, family, FUN!! Did I mention the water slide?!?!?!

e.      TWIB Officers Leadership Retreat at Percy Quin State Park. This fun, interactive, “home away from home” workshop will be Thursday and Friday, with Mrs. Crovetto and Mr. Square leading the training sessions. (Reminder: if you have an air mattress, bring it.)  The Percy Quin experience will continue for Colorguard with Mrs. Crovetto leading the activities through Saturday, 31 May.

f.        “Adopt-a-Trailer!” That’s right! We need new homes for the Cotton Candy Booth and Jonah, the Silver Whale (The Bingo Hall storage trailer). They hung out in my backyard since last summer. Now they have been camped out near the Bandroom. If you would like to help store one or both, or have questions about what that entails, please contact me directly.

4.      Now before we all go our separate ways for a couple of months, please allow me to thank all of you again for an incredible 2013-14 band year. The standing TWIB instruction for this summer is GHAP! Every day that ends in “y”…not tomorrow! And remember that Yesterday is always the best practice day of any week!

19 May TWIB Almost Done!

Band... Now Read and Understand This!

We are getting close to the end of the 2013-14 school year. Not much left, but still VERY important.
Here's the TWIB news for this week:

1. For Monday, 19 May Juniors, Sophomores, and Cosmic Brownie Freshmen: If you did not get the 3 pieces for graduation on Friday (I know we had EOC, Family day, etc.), get them Monday, 19 May as early as you can before 1st period. We'll work through these in class. Graduating Seniors: be sure that you have music for "A Mighty Fortress: from the 3D Band Book, "Happy Days Are Here Again" and "Happy" You'll need to find some time after Awards Day and/or Graduation Practice to rehearse these. This will be the special music for YOUR graduation ceremony this Wednesday evening!

2. For Senior Awards Day on Tuesday, 20 May: No Full Jazz Band, but All-Star Jazz Combo, featuring graduating senior members on "Pork Chop". You'll have a couple of other horns and drums with you all; String Quartet on Disney tunes: "When You Wish Upon A Star" and "Let It Go". More details at school Monday.

3. Tuesday 20 May ASR for Full Concert Band. Rehearsing Music for Graduation on Wednesday evening. Must have 100% attendance at rehearsal and ceremony. Load Equipment trailer immediately after rehearsal!

4. For Wednesday, 21 May: Get to bandroom EARLY so that we can leave for SLU (practice with graduating class); Bus transportation will be provided. I know that 1st and 4th period finals are that day. A message will be emailed to all teachers to ask if you can take your final early OR with another of their classes. We wear FORMAL ATTIRE for the graduation ceremony. Details will be given at Tuesdays ASR.

5. Interviews will continue on Monday for a few remaining candidates during the day. I did not forget about you, and I certainly want to give you your opportunity to share your ideas.

6. DRUM MAJOR candidates will complete the audition and Interview process after school on Monday (tomorrow) 19 May.

7. Fall 2014 Show Music will arrive this week. As soon as we can process it, you'll get your copy.

8. There will be a VERY IMPORTANT MEETING for all participating members of the 2014-15 Greenwave band year on Tuesday, 27 May (next week) to complete forms, get band Camp Info, receive fees schedule; talk DCI field trip, etc.

9. Disney travelers: see me if you did not get your commemorative "Cinch Bag".
I know that's a lot of information! It is a very unusual week; nonetheless, we'll all enjoy it, I'm sure.
See you all on campus

Wrapping up this busy May week!

Band... Now read this!!

From your very tired BD, here are some highlights of this week's activities:

1. Thanks to everyone who helped, in every way, to make the Banquet a night to remember! Beautiful decorations, great food, and good family fellowship all around. And wasn't that a cool sideshow?!?! What a great way to celebrate our band year!

2. Congratulations to ALL participants in today's Solo and Small Ensemble Assessment. I am proud of everyone of you that took the time and effort to invest in preparing your events to the best of your ability. I enjoyed "coaching" those of you who did not mind my help! This is one of the most important events to me as BD, for it offers an opportunity look at the "parts-of-the-whole" based on standard performance adjudication. Can you solo or hold down an individual part in a chamber ensemble? I'll have the results for you all tomorrow (Fri, 16 May).

3. I will begin with Band Officer interviews tomorrow morning, during your assigned band class period, and during both lunches, if necessary. You should have submitted your ESSAY to me by last Friday, 9 May, to be included in the interview process.

4. DRUM CANDIDATES: please see me PRONTO in the morning. I have a "sample" score and parts to all movements of Night Watch for you. Remember that you must prepare all of Movement One and may select one minute of the other movements. Any questions? Ask me.

5. Excluding this year's graduating seniors, everyone else must pick up NEW music before you leave school tomorrow. The titles are these:  "Knights of the Royal Realm"   "Triton Fanfare"     "Fanfare and Processional: Pomp and Circumstance"   Practice your part over the weekend; we will prepare parts in band classes Monday and Tuesday, with ASR on Tuesday.

6. Please keep Mary Anna, Mrs. Crovetto, and their family in your thoughts.

See you all on campus soon... After a good night's sleep I hope,

Solo and Small Ensemble Assessment

Band.... Now read and understand this!

Good news...Bad news.

The Solo and Small Ensemble Assessment Festival scheduled for tomorrow is be moved to NEXT Thursday, 15 May 2014.

Good news for you!!

You have more time to GHAP! And You have more time for me to "coach" you in the performance. Many of you are doing a great job playing the notes...Now let's discover the message in the notes AND "sing" these melodies through your instruments!

You have more time to concentrate on your EOC testing

Bad news for you...."But Mr. Square... I've been practicing since I got home today!" No worries...It will pay dividends when you play for ME, which some of you seem afraid to do. (You'll be surprised that I really won't bite you! I will push you to think outside of the box and beyond the notes!)

Good news for me.... I'll feel better physically and mentally to help you.

Band news for me.... I am running a fever and have a throbbing headache. Maybe making a trip to the walk-in clinic tonight. Additionally, I am asking you all again to NOT SPRAY PERFUME, Deodorant, HAIR SPRAY, etc. Anywhere inside of the music building. This only compounds the major problems I with EVERYTHING blooming full force, especially after our very unusual tropical winter! Thank you for helping out! Wish my mom was here to make me feel better.

Hope to see you all on campus tomorrow.

6 May 2014 Busy Day!!

Band... Now read this!

Tuesday, 6 May will be busy!! We start our day bright and early with our Seniors enjoying their special breakfast at 0645 in the cafeteria. Congratulations to each one of you and thank you for your years of service, involvement, and participation in the Greenwave Band! I realized during Kunihild this afternoon that this was your last ASR!

All Juniors, Sophomores, and Freshmen (yes, Freshmen....You survived your Grunt year!) need to report to the bandroom upon arrival at school. We will need to gather instruments and materials quickly so that we can move quickly to set up for "Senior Send-Off" Not sure what to do?  FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS!!!!

Throughout the day, we will all need to move materials onto the stage, in the auditorium, for tomorrow night's "Spring Concert". Again.... PLEASE FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS!!!

Dress for tomorrow night's concert will be dependent on the Air-Conditioning/ Ambient Temperature of the auditorium. "One if by land...Two if by see, and I at the backdoor will be waiting to see..." Guess who? (Poem and poet?)

Option One:  The AC will be working just fine and dandy. We will wear formal concert attire!

OR

Option Two: NO AC... No Problem!  We will wear School Khaki Bottoms and your choice of T-Shirt (Disney, Spirit, Band Camp Shirt, Band Polo Shirt). It will get very HOT, very QUICKLY on the stage without air-conditioning. Besides, your warpaint will melt off of your face!

I will announcement made at the end of 6th period tomorrow. It would BEHOOVE you all to be prepared for either Option, especially if you are not going home BEFORE the 6:00 downbeat!

Get a good night's sleep and be ready for a great musical time together all day!

See you all on campus,
